European Data Act & adding the required data via the Retailer API

Placed on:25 July 2025

Starting 12 September 2025, the European Data Act (Data Act) will come into effect. This European regulation requires partners to inform consumers in advance about the data collected by connected items — such as smart devices. On the following Partnerplatform page you can read more about the Data Act and what it means for you as a partner.

From September 12, partners who sell connected devices will be required to inform customers before purchase about what data the device collects and how they can view and share that data themselves. To help you with this, we have created this template. Using this template isn’t mandatory, but it can help you meet the requirements quickly and easily. You are also welcome to upload a document from the manufacturer, as long as it includes all the required information.

How can I upload the information?

Via the seller dashboard
Bol will make it possible to upload this information as a document via the seller dashboard starting 12 August 2025. You can use the template or have the manufacturer provide their own document.

Via the Retailer API
From 12 August, you can also upload the document via the Retailer API (either the template or a manufactures document):

  • Use the ‘Create content for a product’ endpoint
  • Add the document as an asset, similar to adding a manual, CE marking, or energy label.

For technical details, refer to the API documentation on adding assets via the API.

Enforcement from 12 September 2025
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) will monitor compliance with the law. You are responsible for complying with the Data Act. We support you with tools and information, but this text does not constitute legal advice.

Support
For help with uploading the document via the Retailer API or seller dashboard, you can contact Partner Service. For legal questions, please consult a legal advisor, as this concerns legislation from the European Union.
