European legislation: provide transparency into data from connected items
As communicated before, since 12 September 2025, the EU Data Act requires sellers of connected (smart) products to inform consumers before purchase about the data these products collect and how users can access, view, share, or delete that data. Connected items include devices such as smartwatches, robot vacuums, smart lighting, and household appliances with internet connectivity.
To comply with the law, sellers must provide information on:
- The type, format, and amount of data the product generates.
- Whether data is collected continuously or in real time.
- Where the data is stored (on the device or an external server), including retention periods.
- How users can access, request, or delete their data, including service terms and quality.
In addition to the Data Act, certain items also require energy labels and product information sheets. Bol will start actively enforcing all mandatory product information (including EU Data Act obligations) on 1 April 2026. Missing required information will result in products being taken offline in phases.
Sellers are fully responsible for compliance. Bol provides tools and explanations, but this is not legal advice. For substantive questions, sellers should consult a legal adviser.
